Hense - 700 Delaware (2012) - Mural on abandoned church

Come Fly With Me: TWA Terninal by Eero Saarinen

Saarinen designed the Trans World Airlines terminal at New York’s JFK airport in 1956. The huge vaulted structure was built on site by pouring concrete into elaboarte wooden moulds forming the wing like structure. The terminal took six years to complete. The groundbreaking terminal made a name for TWA setting them apart from other airlines. Unfortunately the terminal became obsolete as more people started to travel by air, it was not able to accomodate them. The terminal recently underwent a $20 million rennovation to bring it back to its former glory. These photos were taken by Ezra Stoller, Balthazar Korab and Charles Eames.

In search for the right way to save a Frank Lloyd Wright house [Chicago Now]
The clock is ticking on the fate of the David and Gladys Wright house. This house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his son, was patterned after the spiral plan of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Its construction began in 1950 and completed in 1952. After it was publicized in 1953, both architecture historians and critics alike deemed it among the 20 most significant buildings of the world-famous architect. (more)

Do Ho Suh’s Vertigo-Inducing House Opens to the Public

The 70,000 pound house, built from scratch, took one of America’s largest cranes to lift it into place. It’s fully furnished inside and even has an outdoor garden with a plum tree.

So what’s it feel like stepping inside? From Lehmann Maupin: “Inside, people report awe - and vertigo. There are some amazing views of the campus, the Torrey Pines mesa all around. But then there’s the fact that, except for the chandelier hanging straight from the ceiling (thanks to gravity), there isn’t a single plumb line to the house. The floor of the artwork sits at a 5-degree angle from the flat roof of Jacobs Hall, while the house itself is built at a different 10-degree angle. Fallen Star conforms to California earthquake building codes and was built to withstand 100 mph winds. Its foundation is 18 inches thick, compared to the usual 4 inches. But people are perceptually tricked into feeling like they’re falling. Some feel seasick or wobbly. It’s disorienting.”
